The novel tells of a fair young girl who had to fight against harsh men dwelling in the mountains who see nothing in her but a special bottom. Having followed her parents as a young girl in Yemen where she lived the crisis of her father's death at the hand of a man who later married her mother, she suffered harassment also at home.

She flees Yemen, returning to Iraq, when her mother's new husband makes approaches on her, preferring to be lost in the turmoil of the city.
