Tawfik further noted that these groups use social media to attract and train young people to prepare them to mount violent attacks against the capabilities of their country.
The minister’s warnings came during the celebration of the 72nd Police Day held at the Police Academy in New Cairo in the presence of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, state officials, and ministers.
Tawfik thanked the president for attending the ceremony and his efforts to protect Egypt against all threats.
He said the members of the security forces have achieved many successes against terrorism in collaboration with their brothers in the Armed Forces.
Tawfik warned, however, that terrorism still constitutes a clear and present danger that requires that security forces be constantly vigilant.
He highlighted that the Egyptian police managed to thwart 129 attempts to form terrorist cells last year.
Furthermore, Tawfik warned against the threat of the government-designated terrorist group the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), noting that the MB is working to revive itself using its media committees to spread rumours, perpetuate disappointment, entice violence, and shake societal stability and peace.
He noted that the MB also tries to use some elements that do not share its views as a front curtain to achieve its evil goals under the slogan “Different Ideology but a United Goal.”
In addition, Tawfik stressed that with the people's support, the ministry holds the initiative in preventing such endeavours from infiltrating the country and cutting the sources of funding for terrorist groups. He also cited taking legal actions last year against several entities -- worth EGP 3.6 billion -- funding the MB.
Moreover, Tawfik highlighted police efforts in combating illegal immigration, human trafficking, money laundry, and cyber threats using state-of-the-art technology, noting that the ministry managed to stop money laundry crimes worth EGP 253 million last year alone and foiled public money crimes worth EGP 3.7 billion. This success, he said, culminated in reducing the crime rate by 13.9 percent compared to the previous year.
In conclusion, Tawfik, addressing the president, said the situation in the region and the world has proved El-Sisi's correct vision and wisdom, vowing that the members of the police force shall remain loyal to the leadership and vigilant as they protect Egypt against any threats or attempts to undermine its peace and stability.
