Egypt’s Ministry of Interior has requested on Sunday foreign residents to obtain a new registration card to access state services.

The card is valid for foreigners exempted from acquiring residency status, such as foreigners married to Egyptians.

The card can be obtained from the Administration of Passports, Emigration, and Nationality.

State services will be available for foreigners with the new registration card starting in June.

The cost of obtaining the card was not stated in the Ministry of Interior’s statement.

However, the ministry said the move is part of its efforts to verify the status of resident foreigners.

In August, the cabinet issued a decree requiring foreigners residing in Egypt with no valid residencies to legitimize their stay before 15 March, provided they have an Egyptian host and pay $1,000 in administrative fees.

The decision to receive the fees in dollars is the latest in a series of moves by the state to collect more foreign currency amid the country's US dollar crunchrising debt, and inflationary pressures.

There are 9.1 million foreigners from 133 countries residing in Egypt, according to a report by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

The number has increased since the onset of the Sudan civil war in April 2023, which led more than 200,000 people to flee to Egypt.
