The 53-year-old Portuguese tactician took charge of the White Knights on 2nd February, succeeding interim coach Moatamed Gamal.

His tenure began with a goalless draw against Ismaily in the Egyptian Premier League.

While Zamalek have already secured qualification for the knockout stage by topping the group, Gomes is determined to win the match and secure the summit position.

This will not only facilitate their task during the quarter-final draw but also showcase a dominant performance.

Furthermore, Gomes will utilize this opportunity to assess the club's new high-profile winter signings, considering the absence of several key players due to injuries, including defenders Mohamed Abdel-Shafi, Mahmoud 'El-Wensh' Hamdi, and Ahmed Fatouh.

On the other hand, Abu Salim of Libya seeks redemption after their loss to Zamalek in the first leg. They aim to surpass the Egyptian side and create history by making significant progress in their inaugural participation in the continental competition.

The Cairo Giants currently lead Group B with 10 points, closely followed by Abu Salim with one point less. G.D. Sagrada Esperança of Angola sit in third place with 4 points, while Guinea's SOAR Coyah remain at the bottom with no points.
