Brazilian President Lula da Silva has recently visited Cairo to celebrate the centenary of diplomatic relations with Egypt, where he held a summit with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, according to the Egyptian foreign ministry's official statement.

During the visit, both sides agreed on elevating bilateral relations to the level of strategic partnership. Both reaffirmed their commitment to working together to build a more prosperous and democratic international order, where peace as well as inclusive and sustainable development prevail.

Both countries are partners in the BRICS, which Egypt joined in January. With Egypt officially becoming a member of the major emerging economies group, trade between Egypt and Brazil is expected to further increase in the coming years.

Egypt will participate in the G20 meetings per the invitation of the Brazilian presidency. El-Sisi was invited to participate in the G20 Summit, to be held in the Brazilian capital Rio de Janeiro in November.

Egypt's participation in these meetings is the fourth of its kind since the establishment of the group and the second in a row after participating in the previous G20 meetings, upon the Indian presidency’s invitation.

According to the statement, Egypt is Brazil's second-largest trading partner in Africa, with a bilateral exchange of $2.8 billion in 2023.

Since 2009, the two countries have maintained a strategic dialogue mechanism, and in 2010 Egypt signed a free trade agreement with MERCOSUR.

Throughout 2024, Egypt and Brazil will carry out activities commemorating the centenary of diplomatic relations, to highlight the mutual commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between both countries and peoples, the statement added.
