A new format will be applied in the Egyptian Premier League starting from next season 2024/2025, president of the Egyptian Pro League Ahmed Diab said on Tuesday.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the Egyptian league has been struggling in recent seasons to finish on a definite time and also suffered several postponements that affected the clubs negatively.

According to Diab, the Egyptian League system won’t be changed to the two-group format as it will shift to another format like the Belgian League.

“The competition will be divided into two stages. The first will be from one round and the top-ranked clubs {in the first half of the table} will qualify for the next stage to compete for the title with the same points of the first stage,” Diab explained.

“The remaining clubs {in the second half of the table} will compete in the second stage also with the same points but only to set the relegated teams and also the other rankings of the table,” he added.

Diab hailed the new suggested format, stressing that it will save two months from the ordinary schedule as the competition will start by mid-September and end by May.

On Monday, Diab said that the current 2023/24 season will conclude in mid-August, dismissing reports suggesting the domestic competition would extend until October or November.

Currently, Enppi holds the temporary top position in the league table with 23 points after playing 13 games this season.

However, reigning champions Ahly find themselves in 9th place with 17 points from only seven games due to their involvement in continental tournaments.
