Wafd to withdraw from talks if demands aren’t met

Ahram Online, Tuesday 8 Feb 2011

The Wafd party informed Egyptian vice president, Omar Suleiman that they will withdraw from future talks if their demands aren’t met, according to Al-Ahram.

The party issued their demands last Saturday when they handed in a report demanding the amendment of articles 76, 77, 88, 93 of the constitution, and calling for the addition of a new article that gives the president the right to call for an elected constitutional assembly that would be able to establish a new constitution in order to form a new parliament where the government would be the ultimate decision maker instead of the president.

Moreover, they stressed the importance of citizens being granted the right to choose, monitor, and withdraw their confidence from the government if it doesn't meet their demands.

The party stressed that citizens should be able to vote with their national ID cards to insure the integrity of the elections. They also called for the amendment of the parties’ law, calling for the abolition of the parties affairs committee and the formation of any political party as long as it isn’t based on either religion or military forms.

Furthermore, they asked President Hosni Mubarak to withdraw his position as leader of the National Democratic Party and to investigate any connection between the NDP and the vote rigging that took place during the 2011 parliamentary elections.

Investigating the attacks on protesters by security forces during the 25 January revolt was also one of the concerns of the Wafd party.
