Egypt’s private sector will have a paid holiday on 25 April on the occasion of Sinai Liberation Day, said Minister of Labour Hassan Shehata.

If employers decide not to give that day off to employees, the employees should be paid twice their daily wages, Shehata said on Thursday.

Public sector employees will take the day off as per a cabinet decree.

Egypt celebrates Sinai Liberation Day on 25 April to commemorate the completion of the withdrawal of all Israeli military forces from the Sinai Peninsula in 1982, following the 1979 US-brokered Camp David peace accord.

The accord was signed after the victory of the Egyptian army over Israeli occupation forces in the October 1973 War.
