In a statement, Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the UNSC's failure comes at a critical time for the Palestinian cause, which requires the states to assume their historical responsibility by taking a position in support of Palestinian rights.
Cairo further affirmed that recognizing the Palestinian state and admitting it to full membership of the UN is an inherent right of the Palestinian people, who have endured the Israeli occupation for more than 70 years.
The ministry stated that this recognition is an important step towards implementing the two-state solution and preserving the rights of Palestinians.
Obstructing Palestine’s recognition contradicts the legal and historical responsibility placed on the international community for putting an end to the occupation and reaching a just solution to the Palestinian cause, the ministry added.
In this regard, Cairo called on countries to recognize Palestine and work towards creating an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital existing side-by-side with Israel in peace.
Late Thursday, the US spoiled a long-shot Palestinian bid for full UN membership, vetoing a Security Council measure despite growing international distress over the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
The move by Israel's key ally had been expected ahead of the vote, taking place more than six months into Israel's brutal war on the besieged Palestinian territory.
