A “positive progress” has been made in the ongoing Gaza truce negotiations amid intensive Egyptian contacts with all parties, Egyptian news outlet Al-Qahera News reported on Thursday citing a high-level Egyptian source.

“Efforts to reach a truce agreement continue amid a positive atmosphere,” the channel quoted the source as saying.

The current talks on a potential truce and captive release deal are reportedly being held in Cairo, in the presence of Egyptian, Qatari, and American mediators.

A proposal on the table involves halting fighting for 40 days and exchanging dozens of captives for many more Palestinian prisoners, according to AFP.

Hamas, which said it would respond "within a very short period" to the proposal, seeks a permanent ceasefire in the strip and concrete conditions for the unconditional return of displaced individuals to northern Gaza.

Egypt and Qatar helped mediate a week-long ceasefire in late November when Hamas freed over 100 captives in exchange for 240 detained Palestinian women and children.

However, subsequent talks still should progress on a ceasefire or detainee swap deal.

Since 7 October, Israel's brutal military campaign on the Gaza Strip has killed at least 34,568 and wounded more than 77,765 people, 70 percent of whom are women and children, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
