Palestine Week - Teach-in Series: From the Nakba in 1948 to the Ongoing War on Gaza…Understand and Act (12-16 May)
Thurs 16, 2pm: "Palestine and the International Court of Justice" lecture will be delivered by Nesrine Badawi, Associate Professor of public and international law at the Political Science Department, AUC. She received her PhD in Law from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She holds an LLM in international and comparative law, a License en Droit and a BA in political science. Badawi has experience working with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on refugee law and has offered consultancy work to several organizations on humanitarian law and Islamic law.
Tues 21, 7pm Cairo, 5pm London, 12pm New York (via Zoom): Join the virtual book discussion of The Ghosts of Iraq's Marshes: A History of Conflict, Tragedy, and Restoration,(AUC Press, 2024), which tells the gripping history of the devastation and resurrection of the Marshes of Iraq, an environmental treasure of the Middle East, now a protected site. The book discussion will be with book co-authors, Steve Lonergran and Jassim Al-Assadi in conversation with Hassan Partow.
Lonergan is professor emeritus in the Department of Geography, at the University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, Canada, and former director of the Science Division at the United Nations Environment Programme. Al-Assadi is an Iraqi engineer and environmental activist born in the marshes of southern Iraq. He played a pivotal role in the registration of the Marshes as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2016. Thurs 16, 6-8pm: "Struggle of Becoming the Sole Breadwinner as a Woman Refugee" an enlightening talk on the struggles and challenges faced by women refugees who become the sole breadwinners for their families by Maya Chehade, PhD Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow Cedej. This session will feature insightful case studies from Syrian home-based businesses in Egypt and Jordan, providing a deeper understanding of their resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
