This came during Shoukry's meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meetings held on 10-11 June.

According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, part of the discussions between the two officials focused on the Gaza crisis and ways to resolve it.

Shoukry stressed Egypt and Qatar's mediation efforts to reach a deal that would lead to a truce, allowing for the exchange of prisoners and detainees and the delivery of aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza, ultimately aiming for a permanent ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

The two ministers also discussed several regional issues, foremost among them ways to end the Ukrainian war and the latest developments in the Sudanese crisis.

Shoukry expressed Egypt's appreciation for the positive developments in bilateral cooperation, including the Russian zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, lauding the implementation of the Dabaa nuclear power plant project.

He commended the role of the current Russian presidency of the BRICS group, emphasizing Egypt's keen interest in participating in the meetings of the BRICS held by the Russian presidency at the level of ministers and senior officials.
