Israeli forces killed at least 22 Palestinians and wounded 55 others in an attack targeting the tents of the displaced in the Al-Mawasi area, northwest of Rafah, as Israeli warplanes intensified their bombardment over the entire Palestinian territory.

After launching sound bombs to attract people around one of the local makeshift hospitals in Al-Mawasi, near Rafah, Israeli forces fired an explosive shell at the area, killing at least eight Palestinians, witnesses on the ground told Al Jazeera TV.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that its crews were dealing with a large number of casualties after Israel targeted the tents of the displaced in Rafah’s Mawasi.

"Our teams have so far dealt with 18 martyrs and 35 injuries due to the occupation’s targeting of displaced people’s tents in Mawasi #Rafah, west of the governorate," said the PRCS in a statement on X, citing a previous toll.

The Al-Mawasi area was designated by Israel as a safe haven for displaced Palestinians during its invasion of Rafah city.

In a state of panic, dozens of displaced Palestinians have abandoned their belongings in their tents and have rushed to other areas of Khan Younis, Al Jazeera said.

The latest round of Israeli strikes comes as Israel's army appeared to be trying to complete their capture of the southernmost Gaza city of Rafah, Palestinians sheltering in the border city told Reuters.

Israeli tanks could be seen forcing their way into the western and northern parts of the civilian-packed city.

Israel's assault on Rafah, which began in early May, has already seen Israeli forces occupy the east, south, and centre of the city, according to Reuters.

This comes as an Israeli air strike on the Salah family in the Al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City, killed at least 10 and wounded more than 17 others, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

The casualties of the Israeli strike were taken to the Al-Ahli Al-Arabi Baptist Hospital in Gaza City, Wafa said.

The hospital was the site of an Israeli bombing that killed nearly 500 Palestinians in the first month of Israel's war on Gaza.

Meanwhile, five Palestinians were killed and others wounded, as Israel bombed two residential apartments in the center of Gaza City, WAFA added.

Israel has killed at least 37,431 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly women and children, and wounded more than 84,000 others, since the war started, according to the health ministry.

Israel's siege has pushed more than half of the population to the brink of starvation, with people in north Gaza already living under "famine-like conditions."

The situation in Gaza has only deteriorated after Israel sent troops into the southernmost Gaza city of Rafah, the last refuge for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians suffering under Israel's deadly war.
