The Ministry of Education said Egypt ranked 79th in 2023 up from 83rd in 2020 in the Global Knowledge Index (GKI), a ranking organized by the UN Development Programme to track countries' knowledge performance at several levels, including pre-university education and technical and vocational education and training.

The ministerial statement came on Saturday in response to social media reports claiming Egypt had fallen to the 148th place globally in pre-university education.

Such reports are based on outdated data from more than six years ago, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education Shady Zalata said.

Zalata noted that Egypt has jumped 35 places in the GKI’s technical education sub-index, now ranking 46th out of 133 countries, compared to 81st in 2023.

He said this progress reflects the government's concerted efforts to develop the pre-university education sector, a key pillar of the country's economic development.

In recent years, the Egyptian government has introduced several amendments to the public education curriculum and increased the number of technical education schools.

Zalata said the education ministry has already developed the preparatory stage curricula. These amendments are scheduled to be implemented starting next school year.

He added that the ministry is also preparing to develop the secondary school system to complement its series of development measures, according to the statement.

Zalata also stated that the ministry seeks to provide diverse and integrated educational opportunities that are compatible with the needs of the labour market.

Egypt has 1,350 technical education schools working per a special competency system tailored by the ministry to ensure the quality of education services.
