Israel's military said Palestinian fighters fired on Monday a barrage of some "20 projectiles" from Gaza's main southern city Khan Younis, and that Israeli forces were striking the suspected launch site.

"Approximately 20 projectiles were identified crossing from the area of Khan Younis. A number of the projectiles were intercepted and some of the projectiles fell inside southern Israel," the military said, reporting no casualties.

The attack marks the largest barrage from Gaza in months.

The armed wing of Islamic Jihad said it had fired the salvo that targeted several southern Israel settlements along the border with Gaza.

"We bombed ... the settlements along the Gaza Strip with a missile barrage in response to the crimes of the Zionist enemy against our Palestinian people," the Al-Quds Brigades said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a Palestinian was killed and others were injured today in an Israeli air raid targeted a house west of Gaza City, WAFA news agency said.

Late Sunday, several Palestinians were killed and injured this evening in an Israeli shelling of the Sabra neighbourhood in Gaza City.

The Israeli artillery also shelled the vicinity of the al-Awda roundabout in central Rafah, south of the strip.

At least 37,877 Palestinians, mostly children and women, have been killed by Israel since the war started, the Palestinian health ministry said on Sunday.

Another 86,969 have been wounded since the war began on 7 October, it added.
