Emam Ashour canceled out an early goal from Arnold Epa in the 45th minute and Percy Tau, on his return from a lenghty injury, scored the winner in the 63st minute.
The win takes the Cairo giants to 63 points from 25 matches, five points behind Pyramids FC who have played three games more.
Modern Sport remain in fourth on 47 points.
The two teams are set to meet next week, a match that could decide the fate of the championship.
Despite dominating possession, Ahly found themselves behind midway through the first half after a fine individual effort from Cameroonian forward Arnold Epa. However, Emam Ashour restored parity on the stroke of halftime with a headed effort from a free kick.
Marcel Koller's men emerged with renewed purpose in the second half, and the introduction of Percy Tau in the hour mark proved decisive. The South African striker met a corner with a well-placed header from close range to secure all three points for Ahly.
The victory extends Ahly's winning streak in the league to a remarkable 14 matches, equalling Pyramids' feat from earlier this season. The win also keeps them on course to challenge Manuel Jose's record of 17 consecutive wins, in a single season, set in the 2004-2005.
Koller will be targeting a continuation of this form when Ahly face Pyramids in their next league fixture on 22 July.
