The Secretary-General of the Arab League (AL), Ahmed Abul Gheit, has voiced concern about the potential for the military confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon to expand and plunge the Middle East into a broader regional conflict.

In a statement on Monday, Abul Gheit affirmed the AL’s full solidarity with Lebanon and condemned Israel's threats against the country. He stressed that any further escalation would jeopardize the security and stability of the entire region.

The Arab League also called for an investigation into the Sunday attack on the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights town of Majdal Shams, which resulted in the loss of Syrian lives.

“The League has warned time and again… of the negative repercussions resulting from the continuation of the Israeli aggressive war on Gaza, and the risks of its expansion… into a state of major military confrontation and instability,” read the statement.

The League called for an immediate end to the Israeli war, assuring that such a step would help restore calm in Lebanon.

On Sunday, Egypt warned against the risks of opening a new front of war in Lebanon following the attack on the village of Majdal Shams.

Tensions have been running high between Israel and Hezbollah since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza, with the Sunday attack complicating the situation.

Israel has accused Hezbollah of firing a rocket and killing 12 children and teenagers in an attack on a football field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

It threatened to strike hard at the Iran-backed Lebanon group in retaliation.

Hezbollah has, however, denied any responsibility for the attack.
