The Journalists' Syndicate condemned the Israeli assassination of Palestinian leader Ismail Haniyeh, Head of the Political Bureau of Hamas, at dawn Wednesday in Tehran, saying: "It won’t deter the Palestinian people from defending their rights and their pursuit of freedom and independence."

In a statement on Wednesday, the syndicate said Israel resorting to assassinations "is a cheap and cowardly policy that reflects the occupation's dilemmas and failures."

“Occupations have never succeeded in eliminating any just cause anywhere in the world and has not deterred peoples from their right to liberation from occupation; rather, it strengthens their determination to resist,” read the statement.

The syndicate warned that "silence on the practices of the Israeli occupation encourages it to continue violating international law and solidifying its position as the last remaining colonial occupying power in the world."

It extended its condolences to the  "heroic Palestinian people and their valiant resistance represented in the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh, who joins his family members who were assassinated by Zionist terrorism in Gaza weeks ago."

It also called on all Palestinian factions to "unite against the crimes of Zionist aggression."

The syndicate also warned: "The crimes of the Zionist occupying state and its continued escalation of aggression could ignite the region and result in the outbreak of a full-scale war that all parties would pay for."

The syndicate supports "national and patriotic forces who are resisting Israel in a legitimate and legal act as long as the occupation remains entrenched," added the statement.

It called on all Arab countries and the international community to confront the brutal aggression and ongoing hunger war against the Palestinian people and take joint action to end the Zionist occupation of Palestinian lands to establish an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
