"Lebanon's Resistance has officially announced the martyrdom of leader Hajj Mohsen, who was assassinated in an Israeli strike on his home on Tuesday," Al Mayadeen said in a post on X.

According to Al Mayadeen, Hezbollah said Shukur, number two in command after secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah, was present in the building in South Beirut that was targetted in the Israeli strike Tuesday.

Shortly after the Israeli strike, Hezbollah vowed retaliation against Tel Aviv in the "depths of Israel."

The assassination of Shukur came hours before Israel assassinated Hamas Political Bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in his special residence in Tehran while on an official visit to Iran.

Haniyeh was in the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Israel and Hezbollah have traded cross-border attacks since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza on 7 October of last year.

Israeli airstrikes have killed hundreds of Hezbollah fighters and Lebanese civilians.

Hezbollah retaliation has left dozens of Israelis dead.
