Two diplomatic sources told Ahram Online that the preparations for President El-Sisi’s visit to Turkey top the agenda of the meeting, which will be held at Tahrir Palace.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan visited Cairo in February. The Egyptian president's visit has been anticipated since then.
"Preparations will be made for the meetings between the two leaders during Fidan’s trip," one source said, adding that this includes preparations for the high-level strategic council meeting, which the two leaders will co-chair.
During his visit in February, the first in over a decade, Erdogan said "We are awaiting President El-Sisi’s visit to Ankara, and we aim to increase the volume of Turkish investments in Egypt".
Erdogan said at the time that Turkey had raised cooperation with Egypt to a strategic level and seeks to increase trade exchange to $15 billion.
He added that his country is also looking to increase Turkish investments in Egypt, currently amounting to $3 billion.
Diplomatic relations between Egypt and Turkey were severed in 2013 after the ousting of late President Mohamed Morsy (nominated by the Muslim Brotherhood). Commercial ties between the two countries remained, however, intact.
The trade volume between the two countries reached $6.6 billion in 2023, and both nations have worked on normalizing ties after a decade-long rupture.
In a joint conference with Erdogan in February, President El-Sisi said "the two countries can turn a new leaf" in their relationship to strengthen cooperation on all levels.
Furthermore, the developments in Gaza rank high on the agenda of the meeting between Abdelatty and Fidan, especially with tensions increasing after the assassination in Iran of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
A Turkish source pointed out, however, that Fidan’s visit to Cairo was scheduled before the killing of Haniyeh. The source also stressed that "both countries will work to stop Israel's attacks and achieve permanent stability in the region."
