During the phone call, both sides stressed the need to avert escalation and preserve regional security and stability.

Lavrov congratulated Abdelatty on his recent appointment as foreign minister, expressing his keenness to work together to serve the interests of both countries.

According to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty also expressed Cairo's aspiration to strengthen cooperation with Russia.

FM Abdelatty has made a flurry of calls in the past 72 hours with Lebanese, Iranian, and other international counterparts to discuss ways to de-escalate regional tensions, especially after Israel assassinated Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah senior military commander Fouad Shukur.

Egypt - along with Qatar and the US - has been mediating indirect talks between Hamas and Israel to end the 10-month old war in Gaza.
