Hamas's political chief Haniyeh was killed last Wednesday during a visit for the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
A senior Hamas official told AFP on Tuesday that Sinwar's selection as Hamas's new political leader sends a "strong message... of resistance" to Israel.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the choice is "a strong message to the occupation (Israel) that Hamas continues its path of resistance."
Israel, which is widely blamed for the assassination, has not commented directly on the killing.
Sinwar has not made any public appearances since Israel's assault on Gaza began in October.
