Israeli massacre at Al-Tab'een school-shelter in Gaza part of strategy to undermine ceasefire efforts: AOHR

The Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR) has denounced the Israeli massacre at Al-Tab'een School in the Al-Daraj neighbourhood in Gaza City as part of the occupation forces' strategy to undermine the international efforts to reach a ceasefire and end the war on the strip.

Israel bombed the school, located east of Gaza City, where hundreds of Palestinians were sheltering from its war on the strip during Saturday’s dawn prayer, killing over 100 people and injuring dozens of others.

Sparking global outcry, the attack occurred just hours after Egypt, the US, and Qatar — who have been mediating indirect talks between Israel and Hamas to end the Gaza war — called for the resumption of ceasefire negotiations.

“This massacre is one of dozens of atrocities that the occupation forces have owned up to,” the AOHR said in a statement.

“The AOHR firmly believes that the occupation would not have been able to continue this extensive series of atrocities, amounting to nearly 4,000 collective massacres, without the failure of the international order to deter it and enforce the well-established rules of international law,” the statement read.

The organization also accused the US of being complicit in the Israeli war.

“The AOHR is also convinced that the United States' complicity in providing absolute protection to the occupation and aggression has allowed for the escalation of aggression, enabling the occupation to ignite a full-scale war in the region and undermine international peace,” the NGO said.

This complicity is achieved through thwarting UN Security Council resolutions, undermining the effectiveness of International Court of Justice rulings, and continuing the supply of lethal weapons used against defenceless civilians, AOHR explained.

Alaa Shalabi, the AOHR head, said the school massacre is the Israeli response to the initiative of the American-Egyptian-Qatari tripartite initiative to resume ceasefire negotiations.

He also called on the US Secretary of State to direct his pressure towards stopping the Israeli aggression and stopping the supply of American weapons, adding that the current international system is obsolete and can no longer be relied upon.

He pointed out that the International Court of Justice's rulings indicating the potential for genocide against the residents of the Gaza Strip should have automatically triggered immediate action to prevent this tragedy.
