Chemistry and physics will be combined into one subject called "combined science" for 10th-grade students starting the 2024/2025 school year, a government source told Extra News Channel on Wednesday.

The source explained that with the merging of the two subjects, students will have six study subjects that count toward their final scores for the first year of high school.

The source added that the second foreign language will be considered a pass/fail subject not a part of the overall grade.

Furthermore, the source revealed that Minister of Education and Technical Education Mohamed Abdel-Latif will join Prime Minister Madbouly in a press conference to announce a final solution to the problem of overcrowded classrooms and outline a plan to implement related measures.

According to the Ministry of Education, the new school year 2024/2025 will begin on 21 September 2024 and end on 5 June 2025.

The first semester of the new school year will run from 21 September 2024 to 23 January 2025. Mid-term exams will begin on 11 January 2025.

On the other hand, the second semester will begin on 8 February 2025 and end on 5 June 2025.

The final exams for Thanaweya Amma will begin on 14 June 2025.

Adjusting the number of high school subjects is a key aspect of the state's efforts to reform education and transition from a system based on memorization to one that emphasizes comprehension and understanding.

Meanwhile, the first phase of tansik, Egypt's public university enrollment system, began on Monday. The system allows students to apply to their desired public universities based on the grades they obtained.

The tansik system has three phases, with the first containing faculties and colleges demanding the highest grades and the third, colleges requiring the lowest grades.

Approximately 113,200 students will apply during the first phase of the system this year. The deadline for application is 16 August at 7 pm.

To be eligible for the first phase, students should score at least 90.48 percent in the science section, 87.07 percent in the mathematics section, and 68.29 percent in the literature section.
