The Cairo Opera House appointed Egyptian composer and conductor Mohamed Saad Basha as the Cairo Opera Orchestra's principal conductor and artistic director.

Mohamed Saad Basha

Basha, 52, graduated from the Cairo Conservatory and started his musical career in the Cairo Opera Orchestra's percussion section (1998–2002).

During the early years of his career, he shifted to composition and conducting, pursuing post-graduate and other advanced study programmes.

He also studied composition with musician Rageh Daoud and conducting with maestro Ahmed El-Saedi and other musicians.

Basha is serving as a professor and the head of the Conducting and Composing Department at the Cairo Conservatory.

In addition, the musician has formed numerous ensembles that performed across Egypt throughout his over-two-decade career.

In 2010, Basha founded El-Sakia String Orchestra, affiliated with El-Sawy Culture Wheel (El-Sakia).

This ambitious and inspiring initiative aimed to bring the light of classical music to the young listeners attending El-Sakia's concerts.

However, the orchestra's activities were hampered by the post-2011 economic changes.

Moreover, Basha founded the Nile Symphony Orchestra, which has performed on multiple stages since 2015.

At the same time, he has regularly conducted the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, the Cairo Opera Orchestra, the Alexandria Opera House String Orchestra, and the Alexandria Library Orchestra.

Between 2006 and 2017, Basha headed Al Nour Wal Amal Junior Orchestra, an ensemble of visually impaired girls musicians, and served as their music educator.

However, he moved to conduct the senior ensemble, Al Nour Wal Amal Chamber Orchestra, in 2017 and remained with them until 2022.

As a composer, Basha has many orchestral, chamber, and choral works and film scores in his repertoire.

He composed Cleopatra, his first ballet, which premiered at the Cairo Opera House in 2019.

Basha received several awards, with the State Encouragement Award in 2012 being the most important.

The Cairo Opera Orchestra, the second national orchestra, was founded in 1994. It is dedicated to performing opera and ballet works.

Meanwhile, the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, currently managed by principal conductor and music director Ahmed El-Saedi, performs symphonic repertoire.

Among the many Egyptian and international conductors who served as the Cairo Opera Orchestra's artistic directors were Patrick Fournillier, Dominique Rouits (France), Robert Lyall (USA), Ivan Filiev (Bulgaria), Giorgio Croci (Italy), Youssef El-Sisi (Egypt), Nader Abbassi (Egypt), and Nayer Nagui (Egypt).
