The board said the president’s response reflects his confidence in the outcomes of the dialogue’s “serious, diverse, and specialized discussions,” according to a statement released on Wednesday.

The board expressed gratitude for the president’s comprehensive support of the National Dialogue. “We appreciate President El-Sisi’s prompt response and full endorsement of the recommendations,” added the statement.

This also reflects his commitment to “swift justice and the activation of the National Human Rights Strategy,” the statement read.

The board anticipates that all relevant parties will move swiftly to implement these recommendations.

Earlier today, El-Sisi referred the National Dialogue’s recommendations on pretrial detention reduction and criminal justice system reforms to the government, instructing necessary procedures to effectuate these proposals.

The president highlighted the importance of shortening the maximum duration of pretrial detention, using it solely as a precautionary measure when essential for investigations.

El-Sisi also called for adopting alternative detention methods and emphasized the need for compensation for individuals who have been wrongfully detained.

The proposed changes to pretrial detention include reducing the maximum period for crimes punishable by death or life imprisonment from two years to 18 months.

The maximum detention period for misdemeanours would be reduced from six to four months, while the detention period for felonies would be shortened from 18 to 12 months.

The National Dialogue was launched two years ago upon a call from the president to address Egypt's diverse political, economic, and social issues.
