Likhachev's remarks came during a meeting with Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly in New Alamein City, where both sides discussed the progress achieved so far in the Dabaa project, according to the Egyptian cabinet's statement.

Likhachev affirmed that the Dabaa project represents a top priority for Russia, highlighting taking all needed measures to accomplish the project according to the set timetable.

Rosatom chief discussed with Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat ways to localize peaceful nuclear technology, thus supporting Egypt to achieve its goal of depending on new and renewable energy.

For his part, PM Madbouly stressed the importance of the Dabaa project within the state's vision to diversify energy resources by depending on new and renewable energy resources until 2030.

The premier said he is periodically following up on the progress of the Dabaa project, affirming the state's keenness to provide support to accelerate the implementation of the project.

In January, El-Sisi and Putin watched — via video conference — the pouring of the first concrete for the foundation of the fourth and final power unit of the project.

The Dabaa project, located in Matrouh governorate in northwestern Egypt, is the country’s first nuclear power plant.

The 4.8 GW plant is being built by Rosatom in collaboration with Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) and is expected to be fully operational by 2030.

The project is set to provide about 10 percent of Egypt’s energy consumption with an annual production of up to 37 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.

Rosatom, a Russian state-owned nuclear energy corporation, was contracted in 2015 to build the plant and provide it with fuel.
