Egypt to integrate AI transcription tools in courtrooms

Shahd Hashem, Thursday 29 Aug 2024

Egypt has announced plans to integrate an AI-powered speech-to-text transcript system in its courtrooms as outlined in a cooperation protocol signed Thursday between the ministries of justice and communication and information technology.

 AI Courtrooms

The AI-powered engine, developed by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT), will automatically document court session records, improving the efficiency of writing transcripts, the MCIT said in a statement.

The system is expected to be deployed across all criminal and economic courtrooms in Egypt, streamlining daily operations.

The protocol includes developing and using special applications in 66 designated courtrooms to handle the review and renewal of pretrial detention cases, added the statement.

The move is part of Egypt's broader digital transformation strategy, which has seen substantial progress in recent years.

In 2020, the government launched a unified online petition system, which has reduced the time required to process petitions from two weeks to four hours.

In recent years, the country has significantly increased allocations in its budget for the information and communication technology sector.
