Egyptian screenwriter Atef Beshay passes away

Egyptian screenwriter Atef Beshay passed away yesterday after suffering health problems.

A few weeks ago, Beshay suffered a brain haemorrhage and required urgent surgical intervention. Though the operation on his brain was successful, the general deterioration of his health followed. He was admitted to the ICU due to lung inflammation three days before his eventual passing in the late hours of Friday.

Producer Mohamed El-Adl who announced the news on his Facebook page referred to Beshay as "the wonderful screenwriter and the most wonderful friend."

Beshay was born in Cairo and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Helwan University, followed by postgraduate studies at the Higher Institute of Cinema.

He embarked on a scriptwriting career in the late 1970s, with his first recognized works being the TV series The Banquet (1979) starring Taheyya Kariokka and Nabila Obeid and the film To Whom It May Concern featuring Noura and Samir Ghanem.

He went on to pen scripts for more than 50 films and TV series, with most of them featuring a renowned cast of Egyptian actors and directed by known filmmakers.

The films penned by Beshay include Forgotten Womanhood (1994) starring Magda, Fouad El-Mohandes, Samir Sabri and based on a novel by Ihsan Abdel Quddous, The Octopus (2000) starring Mahmoud Yassin and Elham Shaheen, among others.

His TV series are Her Majesty's Tears (1993) with Mervat Amin and Farouk El-Fishawy, The Respectable Man (1999) with Ashraf Abdel Baky and Salwa Khattab, Cinderella (2006) starring Mona Zaki, Shakhloul (2006) with Ashraf Abdel Baky. He also wrote the script for The Yacoubian Building TV series (2007) based on a novel by Alaa El-Aswany.
