Egypt has reiterated its rejection of any Israeli presence in the Philadelphi corridor (also known as the Salah El-Din axis) and the Rafah crossing as a constant of any peace agreement, a high-level Egyptian source told Extra News TV on Monday.

“Egypt reiterates its emphasis on the constants and outlines of any peace agreement, most notably the categorical rejection of the Israeli presence in the Philadelphi corridor and the Rafah crossing,” the channel cited the source as saying.

The source added that the ongoing Israeli war and the potential for regional expansion “pose significant dangers and portend severe consequences across multiple dimensions.”

Furthermore, the source blamed the Israeli government for not reaching a ceasefire deal until now, as it seeks to impose a new reality on the ground to cover up its internal crisis.

Egypt, Qatar, and the United States have been mediating for months to reach a deal between Hamas and Israel to end the more-than-10-month-old Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

Israel's insistence on keeping troops on the 14-kilometre corridor along the Egypt-Gaza border has emerged as a key sticking point.

Thus, Egypt has frequently emphasized its insistence on a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Philadelphi corridor and the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, which has been under Israeli control since May.

Egypt has also rejected Israeli and American proposals to build Israeli watchtowers along the Philadelphi corridor, according to a Wall Street Journal report on 22 August.

Since 7 October, Israel has killed and injured over 130,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, and damaged most of the strip's infrastructure.

Tensions have further escalated with renewed Israeli attacks in the occupied West Bank that began last week – mainly on the cities of Jenin, Nablus, Tubas, and Tulkarem – resulting in more casualties among Palestinians.
