A Cairo criminal court has sought the opinion of Egypt's grand mufti on the preliminary death sentence passed down on Wednesday on the defendant who kidnapped, assaulted, and murdered a Sudanese infant.

The court has scheduled 8 October as the date to issue the verdict on the defendant.

In late April, the body of a 10-month-old Sudanese girl, Janet Jumaa, was found in a public park near her home.

In early May, the prosecution referred the defendant to the criminal court on charges of kidnapping Janet while she was playing with her older sister in front of her home in Cairo’s Nasr City, and then took her to a nearby park, where he assaulted and murdered her.

On 9 May, a Cairo criminal court ordered the defendant to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Egypt's penal code mandates seeking the opinion of the Grand Mufti before issuing a death sentence. However, the opinion itself is not binding.
