President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi urged the international community and the European Union (EU) to exert intense pressure to achieve an agreement that would end the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip and the violence in the West Bank.

Sisi, Borrell

This came in a meeting with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who arrived in Egypt on Monday as part of a tour focused on ending the war in Gaza.

President El-Sisi emphasized to Borrell that ending the Gaza conflict would help alleviate regional tensions and restore stability, according to a statement by the Egyptian presidential spokesman.

The president warned of the gravity of the “ongoing escalation steps that push towards expanding the circle of conflict,” read the statement.

President El-Sisi also commended Borrell on his "objective and fair positions" over the past period.

According to the presidential statement, President El-Sisi and Borrell discussed the intensive efforts by Egypt and partners to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza war and an exchange of captives and detainees.

El-Sisi and Borrell discussed "means to end the catastrophic humanitarian tragedy endured by the Palestinians in Gaza, and pave the way for the actualization of the two-state solution, which would open avenues for peace, coexistence, stability, and development in the region," according to the statement.

For his part, Borrell reaffirmed to El-Sisi the EU's keenness on maintaining consultations with Egypt and supporting its efforts to achive regional stability during this critical phase.

Egypt-EU relations

During the meeting, President El-Sisi and Borrell praised the momentum in their bilateral cooperation, which was recently culminated with the declaration of the Egypt-EU Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership in March and the convening of the Egypt-EU Investment Conference in June in Cairo.

Both sides also affirmed their commitment to exploring new areas of cooperation within the framework of this partnership in the fields of investment, trade, energy, migration, and environment, according to the statement.

The partnership between Egypt and the EU covers six common priorities: political relations, economic stability, trade and investment, migration management, security, and skills development.

In March, the EU delegation to Egypt highlighted the key projects within the economic and investment plan, including energy transformation and security, and supporting the Water-Food-Energy Nexus initiative as part of Egypt's climate strategy.
