President El-Sisi said that these ceasefire efforts must be coupled with implementing the two-state solution to usher in an independent Palestinian state, according to a statement by the Egyptian presidency.
Both sides agreed on the importance of supporting the humanitarian role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), added the statement.
For his part, the Danish top diplomat praised El-Sisi's approach to dealing with the current situation in the Middle East.
Egypt, along with the US and Qatar, has been mediating indirect talks between Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire deal in the 11-month-old Israeli war in Gaza.
Since 7 October, Israel has killed and injured over 130,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, damaged most of Gaza’s infrastructure, and displaced the majority of the population.
Sudanese crisis
El-Sisi also reviewed Egypt’s efforts with the Danish FM to restore stability in Sudan.
The Egyptian president highlighted to Rasmussen the need to respect Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, avoid interference in its internal affairs, and increase aid to alleviate dire humanitarian conditions endured by the Sudanese people.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), resulting in more than 13,000 deaths and displacing more than 10 million people.
Egypt has received thousands of Sudanese refugees fleeing the war and hosted several summits to address the Sudanese crisis.
Egyptian-Danish ties
During the meeting, President El-Sisi and the top Danish diplomat discussed ways to boost Egyptian-Danish cooperation in the economic, trade, and investment fields.
El-Sisi commended the significant role of Danish companies in advancing economic development in Egypt, highlighting opportunities for expanding cooperation, particularly in energy, green transition, and maritime transport.
In 2023, Egypt and Denmark celebrated 65 years of diplomatic relations.
In 2022, Egyptian exports to Denmark reached $49.2 million, compared to $39.4 million in 2021, an increase of 25.1 percent, according to Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
