The deal was signed by Waleed Lotfy, Chairman and Managing Director of Petrojet, and Alexey Kononenko, Vice President of Atomstroyexport, in the presence of Amged El-Wakeel, Chairman of the Board at Nuclear Power Plants Authority, and Samy Shabaan, Chairman of the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority.
Lotfy said Petrojet was pleased to sign the coast protection deal contract for the 4.2 km El-Dabaa station project as part of the company's contribution to establishing the project.
He also noted that Petrojet will implement earthworks for about 2 million cubic metres, supply and install over 800,000 cubic metres of rocks, and manufacture and install more than 91,000 concrete breakwaters.
For his part, El-Wakeel explained that it was agreed with the Russian side that the local participation rate would not be less than 20 percent in the first phase, reaching 35 percent in the fourth phase.
El-Dabaa is located on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, 320 km northwest of Cairo and 170 km west of Alexandria.
El-Daaba's Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) consists of four power units with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts each, equipped with Russian VVER-1200 pressurized water reactors of the third generation.
The first nuclear unit of the El-Dabaa will begin operating in 2028, while the other units will operate successively until 2030.
In 2015, Egypt and Russia signed an agreement to provide a state export loan of $25 billion to Egypt for constructing a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) to generate 4,800 megawatts of electricity via four reactors. The loan covers 85 percent of the cost of construction work, estimated at $30 billion.
On 30 June 2022, the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) permitted Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) to start construction work on the El-Dabaa project.
El-Dabaa is set to provide about 10 percent of Egypt’s energy consumption with an annual production of up to 37 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.
Petrojet is a leading regional engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor with a strong portfolio. The company has contributed significantly to establishing various projects in several industries, including oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical manufacturing, and infrastructure and power generation.
Meanwhile, Atomstroyexport is one of the global leaders in nuclear power engineering, holding 31 percent of the global NPP construction market. The company has offices in 15 countries and carries out 80 percent of its projects overseas.
