Programme: Sufi chanting troupes gear up for Moulid El-Nabi

Ahram Online , Wednesday 11 Sep 2024

Sufi chanting troupes started bringing Islamic traditional zikr (remembrance of God) to the stages of Egypt in celebration of Moulid El-Nabi (Prophet Muhammad's birth).

Moulid El-Nabi, commemorated on 12 Rabi Al-Awwal (the third month of the Islamic calendar), falls this year on 15 September of the Gregorian calendar.

The festivities will occur at various locations before, during, and after Moulid El-Nabi Day.

Sufis, who often wear green turbans and use musical instruments, recite the Quran and praise Allah and Prophet Muhammad.

With millions of Sufis in Egypt, the traditional practices of their rituals are discrete, with chants and rituals confined to hadras (which means "presence" in Arabic), mosques, and religious ceremonies.

Sufi chanters and their ensembles will perform the hadra rituals and zikr music to reflect an authentic spiritual experience.
