Bassem, a seasoned journalist known for his unwavering commitment to the truth and storytelling, leaves a legacy that will not be forgotten.
After earning a Bachelor's degree in Law from Cairo University, Bassem began his journalism career at Rosa Al-Youssef, where he served as a business reporter from 2007 to 2011.
His talent quickly became evident, and he soon joined Al-Ahram, where he honed his skills as a news reporter from 2010 to 2014 and from 2015 to 2017.
From 2014 to 2015, Bassem continued to make significant contributions to journalism through his work with Bloomberg as a news reporter.
In 2017, Bassem joined Agence France-Presse (AFP) as an Arabic correspondent in Cairo, where he spent the rest of his life reporting on some of the most critical stories in the region.
His colleagues remember him as not just a journalist, but a friend who was always ready with a kind word or a helping hand.
Bassem’s passion for journalism and dedication to telling the stories that mattered will be deeply missed.
In a statement, the AFP Cairo office, where Bassem worked, along with his colleagues across the Middle East, North Africa, and the regional office in Nicosia, remembered Bassem for his ever-present smile, kindness, and utmost professionalism.
"Bassem was popular among his colleagues; kind, generous, and friendly. In his profession, he was known for his patience, knowledge, and dedication to telling the stories of people and countries," said Chris Otton, the AFP Chief Editor for the MENA region, in his tribute to Bassem.
His dedication to his craft and ability to connect with people from all walks of life made him a standout journalist.
Bassem is survived by his wife, Menna, who is also a journalist, and their three-year-old son.
