In a statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry affirmed that this appointment marks a significant victory for Egypt, which, along with Germany, spearheaded efforts in preparation for the 2023 UN Water Conference.
According to the statement, Egypt and Germany’s campaign successfully garnered support from 151 countries, advocating for the creation of this position, which is expected to bolster member states' efforts, particularly in water-scarce nations, in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6, which focuses on sustainable management of water resources and access to safe water and sanitation.
The statement further noted that the UN Secretary-General’s decision crowns the Egyptian efforts to develop multilateral work to keep pace with emerging challenges.
Cairo anticipated fruitful collaboration with Marsudi to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda, in light of the great efforts made by the state to rationally manage water resources and enhance cross-border cooperation according to the rules of international law.
According to an official statement by the UN, the UN chief announced on Friday the appointment of Marsudi as his special envoy on water to galvanize partnerships and concerted efforts to advance the water agenda.
“The envoy serves as a champion and high-level advocate on water and sanitation issues, raising water issues high on the political agenda within and outside the UN,” the UN statement read.
