Actress Nahed Roushdy dies at age 68

Egyptian actress Nahed Roushdy died in the early hours of Saturday, her daughter Dina Saad revealed on Facebook.

Roushdy died following a long illness on what would have been her 68th birthday.

Born on 14 September 1956, the Egyptian actress graduated at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in 1982 and dedicated her life to acting.

While still a student, she began her acting career, performing alongside some renowned actors and directors. Roushdy's career began with her appearance in a number of films, including  Cry of an Innocent (1979), starring Mohamed Reda and Elham Shaheen, and La Ya Ebnty Al-Aziza (No, My Dear Daughter, 1979) with Abdel Moneim Madbouly and Hoda Sultan.

In 1985, she played the role of the mermaid of the seas in Fawazeer Ramadan on Egyptian TV alongside Sherihan and Mahmoud El-Gendy. In 1987, she participated in the TV series Tenderness and Denial, starring Abdel-Moneim Madbouly.

In the 1990s, she appeared in over 40 TV series (constituting half her body of work), gaining high popularity. Her appearances from that period include starring in several TV series, including, among others, The Minister's Daughter (1992), starring Mervat Amin and Mostafa Fahmi, The Final Return (1993) with Salah Zulfikar, and Arabesque: The Days of Hassan Al-Noaamany (1994), featuring a star-studded cast of renowned Egyptian actors, including Salah El-Saadani, Hoda Soltan, Abu Bakr Ezzat, Hala Sedky, Hesham Selim, and Soheir El-Morshedi.

In 1996, she starred alongside Nour El-Sherif and Abla Kamel in Lann Aeish fi Gilbab Aby (Falling Far From the Tree), a TV series based on a novel by Ihsan Abdel-Quddous. The role of Saniya, one of four daughters of Abdel-Ghafour Al-Bourai (Nour El-Sherif) in the series, resonated with many viewers, who have ever since often referred to Roushdy as Saniya.

Those years also saw her star in leading roles in series such as Al-Zaini Barakat (1995), Sunset Dreams (1996), with Hussein Fahmy, When Strings Laugh (1997), with Mahmoud El-Gendy and Abla Kamel, and And the Days Go By (1998), starring Sherine, Hala Sedky and Magda El-Khatib. Her appearances in two seasons of Garden City Ladies (1997 and 1998) mark a milestone in her acting career.
 
Throughout her four-decade-long career, Roushdy acted in over 100 TV series, becoming a household face. She also appeared in over 20 films and 20 theatre plays.

Her most recent roles were those in TV series such as Al Ekhteyar (The Choice, 2020), directed by Peter Mimi, Sero El Batea (2023) by Khaled Youssef, and El-Sandouq (Mystery Box, 2023), starring Ahmed Dash.
