In a statement, the Public Prosecution said it formed an investigation team following the accident. The team includes the Chief General Attorney of the South Zagazig Prosecution, the heads of the Mansoura Appeal Prosecution, and prosecutors from South Zagazig.
Members of the investigation team promptly arrived at the scene and inspected the accident site.
According to the statement, following their examination, the investigation team issued orders to clear the wreckage and return the trains to their normal routes.
Other members of the team also examined the deceased and issued burial permits. Meanwhile, the injured are being interviewed, and the investigation procedures are being completed.
The collision occurred between passenger train No. 281, which was travelling from Zagazig to Ismailia, and passenger train No. 336, which was travelling from Mansoura to Zagazig, near Block 5 in the city of Zagazig on Saturday afternoon, according to the Egyptian Railway Authority (ERA).
According to the Ministry of Health and Population, three people were killed and 49 others were injured in the accident.
The ministry stated that the injured were transferred to hospitals in Sharkiya Governorate. It also reported that the condition of 44 is stable and that they are likely to be discharged within the next few hours. Five injured remain, however, in an unstable condition.
Meanwhile, Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir has ordered the formation of a committee of railway specialists to investigate any technical causes behind the collision.
