The Egyptian Premier League (EPL) are considering a new format for the domestic league next season to reduce fixture congestion.

Egyptian Premier League clubs will hold a meeting with the EPL on Wednesday as both sides discuss the format for the new season.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the Egyptian league has been prolonged in recent seasons, failing to finish on time and suffering several postponements that have affected the clubs.

According to EPL member Sherif Saleh, there are three scenarios on the table.

The first is to apply a two-group format, while the second suggests a single round format including all 18 clubs, with the top ten clubs competing for the title in another single round.

The remaining teams will fight to determine the three relegated sides.

The EPL member added that these two scenarios are capable of shortening the season and will help return to normal, as it is expected to reduce the season length by around two months.

“It is the safest system for all the clubs in the Egyptian Premier League,” he said.

The third scenario is to keep the domestic league as it is, but with a more condensed schedule due to the clubs' and various national teams’ commitments.

It has been reported that the majority of Egyptian Premier League clubs refuse to make any modifications to the competition’s format, opting to stick to its traditional system.
