Ahram Online highlights a selection of do-not-miss events this week 18-24 September 2024 in Cairo.

Not to be missed


Sufi troupes continue celebrations of Moulid El-Nabi (Prophet Muhammad's birth) - which this year fell on 15 Sept 2024 - with performances of Islamic traditional zikr (remembrance of God) across Egypt’s stages.

Goethe Film Week - film

The Goethe Film Week's programme encompasses recent productions ranging from dramas, comedies and musicals to documentaries and shorts.

The programme includes a total of 15 feature films that have participated in international film festivals and received wide attention from audiences and critics, in addition to two short film programs. Some of these films are being screened for the first time in Egypt.

Screenings are complemented with workshops, seminars and discussion sessions with the filmmakers.

Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 September bring several new films to movie theatres across Egypt:

Ali Quandil - standup comedy

El-Sawy Culturewheel, 26th of July Str, Zamalek, River Hall, Cairo

Ali Quadil is one of the first stand-up comedy performers in Egypt. Over the last 10 years, he has presented 500 shows in more than 20 Egyptian cities, in addition to his shows in Dubai and The Comedy Club in Jeddah.  

Quandil founded the first cultural center for training the art of stand-up comedy in Egypt and the Arab world, through comedy workshops that are attended by many of the known names in the Egyptian stand-up comedy today.

Shady Mohammad Abdul-Salam - music
Thursday 19 September, 8pm
Room Art Space & Café, 10 Etehad Al Mohamin St., Garden City

Shady Mohammad Abdul-Salam will present a collection of new songs and covers by known musicians.

Abdul-Salam will be accompanied by his band:  keyboard, accordion, violin, percussion, and bass guitar.

Reem Ezzeldin - music

El-Sawy Culturewheel, 26th of July Str, Zamalek, Wisdom Hall, Cairo

Ezzeldin's repertoire includes a number of songs by great composers and singers, such as Fairouz, Abdel Halim Hafez, Fadel Shaker, Hamid Al Shaeri, and Amr Diab, in addition to some of Reem Ezzeldin’s original songs.

Following more than 15 years of performing with numerous formations, Ezzeldine launched her own band in 2022. She performed in numerous venues including the American University in Cairo (Tahrir Campus), Arabic Music Institute, Room Art Space (garden City & 5th Settlement), and the Cairo Opera House’s small hall, during the Arabic Calligraphy celebrations.

Mood of Oud - music

Mood of Oud is a project by Michael Onsi inviting audiences to his own compositions and arrangements. This concert marks the fifth anniversary since the launch of Mood for Oud in 2019

Onsi studied oud at Cairo’s Beit El-Oud founded by Shamma, graduating with excellence in late 2017.

A series of concerts and tours followed, in which he played with different troupes, many led by Shamma. Alongside this, Onsy began composing his music until his trajectory converged on Mood for Oud, a project which he presented on numerous stages.

Cairo Opera Orchestra - music
Thursday 19 July, 8.30pm
Cairo Opera House, main hall, Zamalek, Cairo

The inaugural concert of the Orchestra’s 2024-25 season will feature works by Rossini, Saint Säens, Emmerich Kálmán, Carl Orff, Alberto Ginastera, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Gamal Abdel Rahim.

The soloists of the evening are soprano Mona Rafla, mezzo-soprano Jolie Faizy, and baritone Khaled Samir. 

The Cairo Opera Orchestra and Cairo Opera Choir will be conducted by Mohamed Saad Basha.

Arees El-Bahr - theatre
20-23 September, 8pm
Rawabet Art Space, 5 Hussein Basha Al Meamari, Downtown Cairo

Following the success of the show last August, Arees El-Bahr returns to Rawabet Theatre.

The play is inspired by Mohamed Taha’s balad Maspud and Wajida, and directed by Waleed Talaat.

Arees El-Bahr’s plot revolves around two brothers divided by greed.

Cassette Night - music
Saturday 21 September, 8pm
Room Art Space & Café, 10 Etehad Al Mohamin St., Garden City

The show is a musical performance with cello as its main protagonist.

The evening will include the well-known songs of the 1990s, coming from the repertoire of the golden generation singers, such as Hamid El-Shaeri, Amr Diab, Ehab Tawfik, Mustafa Qamar, Hisham Abbas, and Simon.

The band consists of cellist Amira Shaaban accompanied by musicians on keyboards, guitar, bass guitar, percussion, and drums.

Omar Khairat - music
Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 September, 8pm
Cairo Opera House, main hall, Zamalek, Cairo

Born in 1947, the multi-award-winning Khairat is one of the top musicians of the Arab world with hundreds of memorized compositions in his repertoire.

Throughout his long and successful career, he has written scores for numerous films and television series, including The Sixth Day (1984), The Terrorist (1993), Mafia (2002), Girl’s Love (2003), The Embassy in the Building (2005) and Deer’s Blood (2006), to name but a few.
