Result of the General Assembly vote on a draft resolution on the ICJ advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory
The landmark resolution called on Israel to end its "unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory," aligning with the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice regarding the legal consequences of Israeli practices in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem.
Adopted on Wednesday, the resolution saw 124 countries vote in favour, while 14, including Israel and the United States, voted against it, and 43 countries abstained.
In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt emphasized that the resolution's approval by a majority vote demonstrates “significant international backing for ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and its ‘unlawful actions.’”
The resolution further demanded that Israel withdraw its military forces, halt the expansion of illegal settlements, evacuate all settlers from occupied land, and dismantle parts of a separation wall built in the occupied West Bank.
Cairo stressed the importance of unified international efforts to restore the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, promote the two-state solution, end the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, and establish an independent Palestinian state based on the borders of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
On Monday, Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour explained his country’s drive behind the case prior to the resolution’s adoption: "The idea is you want to use the pressure of the international community in the General Assembly and the pressure of the historic ruling by the ICJ to force Israel to change its behavior," he said.
