Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty affirmed on Monday Egypt's "complete rejection of any violations of Lebanon's sovereignty and territories," stressing the "necessity of reining in the Israeli military escalation" and supporting Lebanon.

This came during Abdelatty's participation in the Arab Ministerial Consultative Meeting on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' statement.

During the meeting, FM Abdelatty strongly condemned the grave Israeli escalation in Lebanon and the extensive military operations that led to the death and injury of hundreds of Lebanese people, including women and children.

He also urged further efforts to preserve regional security, affirming the necessity of avoiding a military solution that would only lead to further bloodshed and threaten civilians' lives, pushing the whole region into a full-scale war with dangerous repercussions.

Despite its continued efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and contain the war risks, Egypt has called on international powers and the UN Security Council (UNSC) to take immediate action to halt Israel's escalation, Abdelatty said.

It endangers all peoples in the region and peace prospects, he stressed.

Moreover, he emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. This includes immediately halting escalation, unbiasedly implementing UNSC Resolution 1701, and allowing diplomatic solutions to prevent conflict exacerbation.

At least 492 were killed and 1,246 injured in the Israeli strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon on Monday, marking the deadliest day of cross-border violence since the Israeli war on Gaza began.

Egypt has repeatedly affirmed its full support to Lebanon amid the Israeli attacks, renewing its warning that such unjustified escalation poses catastrophic consequences to the region.

Gaza war

Abdelatty stressed the necessity of confronting the Israeli policies aimed at preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state.

It has been almost a year since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza, with Israel continuously disregarding all the UN ceasefire resolutions, he said.

Additionally, he highlighted the importance of seizing the opportunity in the upcoming international and regional forums to mobilize support for the Palestinian cause, paving the way to establish a Palestinian state over the June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The foreign minister also pointed out Egypt's intensive mediation efforts with various parties to reach an immediate ceasefire and ensure an unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid to the strip.

Cairo fully rejects any scenarios aimed at continuing the occupation of Gaza, closing the Rafah border crossing, displacing Palestinians, or legitimizing and expanding settlement outposts on the Palestinian territories, Abdelatty emphasized.

He also affirmed Egypt's ongoing support to the Palestinian Authority to regain control over governance, administration, and law enforcement in the strip, shedding light on the Egyptian efforts along with regional and international partners to expand the recognition of a Palestinian state.

Abdelatty praised the UNGA's recent adoption of a resolution on the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the legal consequences of Israel’s practices and policies in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.

Since 7 October, Israel has killed and injured over 130,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, damaged most of Gaza’s infrastructure, and displaced the majority of the population.

FM Abdelatty's participation in the 79th UNGA followed a visit to Washington DC, where he had multiple meetings with senior US officials.
