Owda won the Outstanding Hard News Feature: Short Form at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards for It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive, created with AJ+, the digital platform of Al Jazeera.
The series of videos documents Owda's life in Gaza since the eruption of Israel's war on the strip on 7 October 2023.
The awards were revealed on Wednesday as a follow-up to the Creative and Primetime Emmys held earlier this month.
During the ceremony, the award for Owda was received by Jon Laurence, a senior executive producer at AJ+.
"We'd like to thank the academy for this recognition. This award is a testimony to the power of one woman who with only an iPhone survived almost a year of bombardment," Laurence said during the acceptance speech.
He went on to underscore that over 100 Palestinian journalists were killed in Gaza, including those representing Al Jazeera.
Owda has 4.8 million followers on Instagram, where her handle is @wizard_bisan1.
She has over 1.2 million followers on TikTok, a number which has risen from 190,000 since her nomination was announced last August.
Owda often uses these two platforms to live stream videos about the realities of the Gaza Strip.
In addition, international communities and renowned outlets, including ABC, CBS, and BBC, have picked up 20-year-old Bissan's videos.
Following the last August news that Owda is considered for an Emmy, the Creative Community for Peace, a pro-Israel lobby group of entertainment industry leaders, signed an open letter calling for a withdrawal of Owda’s nomination.
"Five days before Owda’s win, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said it would not rescind her nomination saying it was unable to corroborate reports of Owda’s involvement in the organization," media reported.
Owda and Watermelon Pictures shared an announcement about her win on Instagram, with the latter congratulating Owda saying, "We are so proud of Bisan, who has risked everything to show the world the truth on the ground in Gaza for the past 355 days and counting."
"Well done to Bisan, and to all the journalists of Gaza and Palestine who fearlessly report the truth."
