Renowned Egyptian actor Yehia El-Fakharany will return to the National Theatre as King Lear for the first time after playing the Shakespearean tragic character on the same stage more than two decades ago.

In 2001, directed by Fatma Moussa, El-Fakharany was accompanied by a cast that included Ashraf Abdel-Ghafour, Ahmed Abdel-Halim, Riham Abdel-Ghafour, Ahmed Salama, Salwa Mohamed Ali, and Nermeen Kamal.

King Lear is now scheduled to return to the historic theatre sometime between December 2024 and January 2025.

The new cast will include Sahar El-Sayegh, Abed Anani, and Tarek El-Desouky, among other renowned actors.

Over the past two decades, King Lear, with El-Fakharany playing the protagonist's role, was staged on different stages.

In 2019, King Lear directed by Tamer Karam was staged during the Jeddah Season, then the Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia, followed by its performance at the Marquee Theatre in New Cairo.

The cast featured numerous well-known actors, such as Farouk El-Fishawy, Mohamed Farrag, Heba Magdi, Rania Farid Shawki, Riham Abdel-Ghafour, Ahmed Azmi, Ahmed Fouad Selim, and Mohamed Fahim.

King Lear, a tragedy by William Shakespeare, was written between 1603 and 1606 and was first performed on stage in 1606 in London.

This five-act tragedy explores the theme that humans can only find answers to their suffering and questions within themselves and their earthly surroundings.

Over more than five centuries, King Lear has been adapted for stage and screen globally, with various famous actors playing the role of Lear. The list of prominent actors who portrayed the tragic king is topped by British actor Laurence Olivier, who first played Lear in a notable production at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1946 and later reprised the role in an acclaimed 1983 TV film.
