Zamalek claimed the trophy after a 1-1 draw, with goalkeeper Mohamed Awaad emerging as a hero during the shootout. Awaad, who had not played for the team in two months, saved a crucial penalty from Ahly's Yahia Attiyat Allah.
“My family predicted I would play in this match and be the reason we won, i studied the opponents, and thank God I was able to contribute to this victory.” Awad told OnTime Sports.
“We stood back on our feet after falling behind, We were determined to win, and this title will give us great momentum as we start the new season.” Hossam Abdel-Meguid told beIN Sports.
Omar Gaber, also speaking to beIN Sports, reflected on the unexpected penalty that gave Ahly the lead. “We were surprised by the call, but we stayed focused and didn’t let it derail us. This win will make a big difference for us this season,” Gaber said.
“This win against our traditional adversary gives us more confidence to achieve further success,” Tunisian Hamza Mathlouthi told Saudi newspaper Okaz.
Ahmed "Zizo" El-Sayed described his decision to remain at the club as one of the best in his career.
“Not many believed me when I said Zamalek is a team of both local and continental titles, but God has rewarded everyone’s efforts, This title is for our fans, and we hope it’s the first of many this season,” Zizo told beIN Sports.
Zamalek's 4-3 victory on penalties marked their fifth African Super Cup title and provided a much-needed morale boost as they look to challenge for more silverware in the 2024 season.
