In a phone call on Saturday evening, the Egyptian president reaffirmed to the Lebanese PM that Cairo supports an immediate, comprehensive, and permanent ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.
The call comes hours after the Lebanese Hezbollah confirmed that its leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the southern district of Beirut on Friday evening.
It also comes amid week-long intense Israeli airstrikes on eastern and southern Lebanon which killed more than 700 and wounded hundreds of others in the country.
During the call, President El-Sisi stressed to PM Mikati that Cairo believes the international community must shoulder its responsibilities in stopping Israel's aggression against the Palestinian territories and Lebanon.
The failure of the international community to do so would risk the region descending into dangerous escalations that threaten regional and international peace and stability, stressed the Egyptian president.
For his part, the Lebanese PM expressed gratitude for Egypt's support for his country and the Lebanese state, according to the statement.
Mikati also reviewed with El-Sisi the outcomes of the Lebanese government's ongoing efforts to contain the current conflict.
He also praised Cairo's efforts toward restoring security and stability in the region, according to the statement.
Stand with Lebanon
The Egyptian president has directed the immediate dispatch of emergency medical and relief aid to Lebanon in solidarity with its people, added the statement.
Egypt has condemned recent Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon as a blatant violation of Lebanese sovereignty.
On Friday evening, during a speech at the United Nations Security Council emergency session on Palestine hours after the Israeli airstrikes on southern Beirut, Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty condemned Israel's persistence in expanding the conflict in the region with its ongoing attacks on Gaza and recent attacks against Lebanon.
