Egypt records 265,000 divorces cases during 2023: CAPMAS

The number of divorce cases in Egypt recorded in 2023 amounted to 265,606, compared to 269,834 in 2022, reflecting a 1.6 percent decrease whereas the number of marriage contracts reached 961,220 in 2023, compared to 929,428 in 2022, marking a 3.4 percent increase, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said on Sunday.

Divorce cases in 2023

 

In its annual report on marriage and divorce statistics for 2023, CAPMAS stated that there were 265,606 divorce cases in 2023, compared to 269,834 cases in 2022, marking a 1.6 percent decrease.

The total number of divorce cases in urban areas was 150,488 in 2023, representing 56.7 percent of all divorces, compared to 156,278 in 2022, reflecting a 3.7 percent decrease.

In rural areas, there were 115,118 divorce cases in 2023, accounting for 43.3 percent of the total, compared to 113,556 in 2022, showing a 1.4 percent increase.

Marriage contracts in 2023
 

CAPMAS stated that the number of marriage contracts in urban areas totalled 388,696 in 2023, representing 40.4 percent of the total contracts, compared to 384,468 in 2022, with a 1.1 percent increase.

Rural areas saw 572,524 marriage contracts in 2023, accounting for 59.6 percent of the total, compared to 544,960 in 2022, a 5.1 percent rise.

For grooms, the highest percentage of marriages occurred in the 25-30 age group, with 400,846 contracts, representing 41.7 percent of the total contracts.

The average age of grooms was 30.3 years in 2023.

For brides, the highest percentage of marriages occurred in the 20-25 age group, with 379,246 contracts, representing 39.5 percent of the total.

The average age of brides was 24.8 years in 2023.

The groom and bride's education level
 

Concerning grooms' educational level, the highest percentage of marriages was among those with secondary education, accounting for 378,248 contracts or 39.4 percent of the total.

Similarly, for brides the highest percentage of marriages was among those with secondary education, with 301,811 contracts or 31.4 percent of the total.

The overall marriage rate in Egypt was 9.1 per 1,000 in 2023, up from 9.0 per 1,000 in 2022.

In 2023, the marriage rate in urban areas was 8.6 per 1,000, compared to 9.5 per 1,000 in rural areas.

The highest marriage rate was 16.5 per 1,000 in Aswan, while the lowest was 5.9 per 1,000 in Giza.
