The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb during a meeting with the President of the Evangelical community in Egypt Andrea Zaki, along with delegations from the South African Council of Churches and the Middle East Council of Churches on Tuesday 1 October, 2024.
El-Tayyeb censured major powers for calling for an end to Israeli hostilities in Gaza while simultaneously supplying weapons to Israel to continue its brutal aggression.
He stressed that those who practice this global hypocrisy have no genuine interest in achieving peace and justice in the region or in supporting the oppressed people in Gaza and Lebanon.
Remarks of El-Tayyeb, the head of the world's leading Sunni Islamic institution, came during a meeting with the President of the Evangelical community in Egypt Andrea Zaki, along with delegations from the South African Council of Churches and the Middle East Council of Churches.
Religious Alliance Supporting Palestinian State
The grand imam proposed the formation of an alliance of religious leaders dedicated to advocating for the establishment of a Palestinian state.
He noted that the Arab and Islamic world has often been distracted by sectarian conflicts, which has hindered its ability to respond effectively to contemporary challenges.
"If the Palestinian and Lebanese people possessed even 1 percent of the military capabilities that the Zionist entity possesses, this occupier would not have dared to deal in such an inhumane manner," he stressed.
For his part, Zaki echoed the El-Tayyeb sentiments, emphasiing the crucial role of interfaith dialogue in addressing the injustices faced by the Palestinian people.
He underscored the importance of continued communication and coordination among religious leaders globally on issues affecting humanity.
Meanwhile, the delegations expressed their eagerness to support the grand imam in forming a religious alliance aimed at establishing the Palestinian state.
They highlighted the urgent need for a united religious front against the ongoing violence in Gaza and Lebanon, where children, women, and men have been killed due to Israeli military operations.
The delegations noted that the collective aim of the proposed alliance is to confront the unjust policies against Palestinians, which serve as obstacles to humanitarian aid and perpetuate the cycle of violence.
They also criticised policies that impose taxes on places of worship in the West Bank to tighten control over them as part of the policies of Judaization being implemented in Palestine.
The brutal Israeli aggressions in Gaza and Lebanon have raised concerns about the possibility of a large-scale regional conflict.
