Mostaqbal Watan party retains dominance in Egypt parliament committees’ elections

The pro-government Mostaqbal Watan party (the Nation's Future) — which holds 54 percent of seats of Egypt's House of Representatives — dominated the elections, held on Wednesday, for the leading posts of parliament's 25 committees.

The Mostaqbal Watan Party, which holds a majority with 316 of the 596 seats in parliament, won 67 out of the 100 contested seats in the latest election.

On Tuesday, after a three-month summer recess, the House of Representatives began the fifth and final legislative session of its current five-year term. This session marks the last before new elections are held at the end of 2025.

All chairpersons of the House's 25 committees were re-elected without contest, with 17 of them affiliated with the Mostaqbal Watan Party. Additionally, five independent MPs and representatives from the Homat Watan (Protectors of the Nation), Al-Wafd, and El-Horreya (Freedom) parties were elected as chairpersons.

During Tuesday's session, House Speaker Hanafy El-Gebaly announced that parliament had received 11 draft laws and 18 presidential decrees from the government for discussion and voting in upcoming meetings. Among the draft laws are those regulating the performance of the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), the Importers' Register, joint-stock companies, and the creation of a national council for education, research, and innovation. Other drafts include regulations on the practice of pharmacy and the construction of a logistics terminal for dry goods at Alexandria Port.

El-Gebaly also noted that Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly's government had approved parliamentary committee amendments to the new Criminal Procedures Law.

Parliament will reconvene on 7 October.
